Hair transplant surgery, a procedure that involves grafting hair follicles from one part of the body to areas suffering from hair loss, has gained prominence in recent years. What happens in a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure designed to treat hair loss by relocating healthy hair follicles from a donor site (typically the back or sides of the head) to areas with thinning or no hair. As the transplanted hair is resistant to the hormone that causes baldness (DHT), it continues to grow in its new location, resulting in a fuller, natural-looking head of hair.

Types of Hair Transplant Techniques

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Often referred to as the 'strip method,' FUT involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area. Individual hair follicles are then extracted from this strip and implanted in the recipient areas. This method often leaves a linear scar at the donor site.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In FUE, individual hair follicles are directly extracted from the donor area using tiny punches and then transplanted to the balding regions. It's more time-consuming than FUT but doesn't result in a linear scar. Instead, there are tiny pock mark scars in the donor area where the hair has been extracted which are usually not visible once the hair grows a little longer in the donor area.

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)
This is a form of FUE, but with DHI, the extracted hair follicles are directly implanted into the recipient area without prior creation of holes, offering more precise placement.

Factors for Consideration

It is not a comprehensive solution
While a transplant can restore hair to receding areas, it doesn't prevent future hair loss in untreated areas. Some individuals may require multiple procedures or might need to combine surgery with other treatments for best results. This means that you if have enough donor hair (that is an if for those without high density on the sides and back), then the hair that has been transplanted to the crown or the vertex will be resistant to future hair loss. Unfortunately, the hair that currently surrounds the transplanted hair in the new area will not be, hence, as you age, and incur more hair loss, the pristine hair line constructed by the trichologist will no longer remain.

You will need additional transplants as you age and lose more hair. It may eventually lead to a very unnatural patchy look.

Daily Regimen
On the positive side, the daily regimen for Propecia, Regaine or whatever your resultant regimen may be, may not be needed. This may be the case if you had no DHT-affected hair in the transplanted area, e.g. it was totally bald. However, if your transplanted hair has been mixed in with existing hair, the need for the daily regimen to ensure your new hair look lasts may be even more compelling to avoid an unnatural patchy look as the DHT affected hairs miniaturise.

More hair, More Cost
Surgeons transplant hair follicles, so the more than need to be transplanted, the more it will cost, and the more time it will take. In addition, unlike PRP or derma-rolling, transplants will takes a month or two or maybe even three to recover before onlookers stop asking you why you are wearing a beanie inside the office. Having said that, if you have no hair at all, the question of whether to leave it as is and embrace the Bruce Willis or Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson look or strive to get the Arnold's hair in Conan the Barbarian (let's be honest, this is not possible without hair cloning), will be your decision.

While many celebrities prefer to keep their surgical endeavors private, a few have openly discussed or are speculated to have undergone hair transplant procedures. Notable names include:

• Elton John: One of the early adopters, Sir Elton John, had his first hair transplant in the 1970s.
