Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is one of the gonadotrophic hormones, the other being Luteinizing Hormone (LH). Both are produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland in the brain. FSH plays a pivotal role in the reproductive system of both males and females.
Role in women
In females, FSH is essential for:
- Ovarian Follicle Development: At the onset of each menstrual cycle, FSH stimulates the growth and maturation of immature ovarian follicles in the ovary.
- Estrogen Production: As these follicles grow, they produce estrogen, a key female sex hormone.
As the menstrual cycle progresses, the rising estrogen levels will subsequently cause a decrease in FSH production due to a negative feedback mechanism.
Role in men
In men, FSH facilitates:
Sperm Production: FSH, in conjunction with testosterone, promotes the maturation of sperm cells in the testes.

Abnormal FSH levels can be indicative of various reproductive and developmental issues:
- High FSH Levels: In women, high levels, especially in the early menstrual cycle, can indicate diminished ovarian reserves. In men, it might indicate testicular dysfunction.
- Low FSH Levels: This can be suggestive of problems related to pituitary function and can lead to infertility in both genders.
