Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. Together with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), LH is classified as a gonadotrophic hormone. These hormones are central to the endocrine system's regulation of the reproductive system in both men and women.
Role in women
- Ovulation: One of the most crucial roles of LH in the female reproductive system is the stimulation of ovulation. Midway through the menstrual cycle, there's a surge in LH levels, which triggers the mature follicle in the ovary to release an egg, an event known as ovulation.
- Corpus Luteum Formation: After ovulation, the ruptured follicle transforms into a structure known as the corpus luteum. LH stimulates this transformation. The corpus luteum, in turn, produces the hormone progesterone.
- Progesterone Production: Progesterone is vital for preparing the endometrial lining of the uterus for the potential implantation of a fertilized egg. If implantation does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, leading to a drop in progesterone and eventually the onset of menstruation.
Role in men
Testosterone Production: In men, LH acts on the Leydig cells in the testes to stimulate the production of testosterone. Testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, plays a pivotal role in the development of male reproductive tissues, the manifestation of secondary sexual characteristics, and the production of sperm.
LH levels can be indicative of various reproductive and endocrine health conditions:
- Infertility: An imbalance in LH levels can lead to infertility in both men and women. For instance, in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), there's often an elevated LH to FSH ratio.
- Pituitary Disorders: Abnormally low or high levels of LH can signal issues with the pituitary gland, such as pituitary tumors or hypopituitarism.
- Menopause: In women approaching menopause, the ovaries become less responsive to LH, leading to an increased release of this hormone by the pituitary gland. As such, elevated LH levels are often a hallmark of menopause.
In clinical settings, LH levels are frequently measured alongside FSH, especially in fertility evaluations. This is because the balance between these two hormones is vital for reproductive health.
