What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves using a device with fine needles to create thousands of microscopic punctures in the skin's top layer. Originally, this method was used for reducing scars, improving skin texture, and promoting skin rejuvenation. However, recent studies suggest that it might also stimulate hair regrowth.
How Does Microneedling Work for Hair Loss?
The exact mechanism is still under study, but a few proposed theories include:
- Release of Growth Factors
The minor injuries can increase the production of growth factors known to enhance hair growth, such as epidermal growth factors. - Enhanced Absorption of Topical Treatments
When used alongside topical treatments like Minoxidil, microneedling might improve the absorption of these products, making them more effective
Can you do this yourself?
Microneedling is a professional service undertaken by a trained physician, however, derma-rolling, which is a light weight equivalent, can be done safely and at home. In one of the research papers (below), the participants used a 1.5mm derma-roller for 12 weeks together with a 2x per day minoxidil regimen to achieve impressive results.
