Resistance training
Resistance exercises, commonly known as strength training or weight lifting, involve the use of resistance in the form of weights, resistance bands, or even body weight to challenge the muscles. They have been shown to have various physiological impacts on the body, including alterations in androgen levels, particularly testosterone.
Testosterone is a primary male sex hormone but is also present in females in smaller amounts. It plays a pivotal role in muscle growth, bone density, and overall male reproductive health. Several studies have shown acute increases in serum testosterone levels following a bout of resistance training. The surge typically happens shortly after the exercise and can last for several hours. The magnitude of this increase often depends on various factors like the intensity and duration of the workout, the muscle mass involved, and the individual's training status. For instance, compound movements, like squats and deadlifts that involve larger muscle groups, can induce greater testosterone responses compared to isolation exercises.
The chronic effects of resistance training on resting testosterone levels, however, are not as straightforward. While some long-term training studies show slight increases in basal testosterone levels, others do not find significant changes. The exact reasons for these discrepancies remain an area of ongoing research. Factors like training experience, age, and diet could potentially play a role.
Furthermore, resistance exercises also influence other androgens and related hormones. For instance, there's evidence suggesting that resistance training can enhance the sensitivity of androgen receptors, which are critical for the effects of testosterone and other androgens at the cellular level. This improved sensitivity means that even without significant changes in serum testosterone levels, the muscle tissues might respond better to the existing testosterone.
In conclusion - it's hard to say for sure what the impact is - resistance exercises can indeed modulate androgen levels and function in the body, with acute rises in testosterone being a consistent observation post-exercise. Using anabolic steroids for example, does appear to enhance masculine effects, such and contribute to hair loss. See research below.
